Compassionate Workers’ Comp Attorneys in New York City
Exposure to asbestos can lead to a chronic lung condition known as asbestosis, one of four diseases associated with this toxic building material. Because of its inability to burn, asbestos was long used in the construction industry and building trades as a protection against fire. Asbestos came under strict regulations in 1970 to protect individuals in the workplace from its health risks. However, it can take decades for asbestosis and other related diseases to develop in an exposed individual. This means you may need legal help.
At The Perecman Firm, we stand up for the rights and interests of those who have been harmed by the negligence and dangerous behavior of others. If you have developed asbestosis or have lost a loved one due to asbestosis complications, you may be justified in pursuing a legal claim for compensation against parties responsible for your suffering.

What Is Asbestosis?
Asbestosis is caused by breathing in asbestos dust or fibers which then cause a scarring of lung tissue. This scarring is called fibrosis. As the scarring builds up in the lungs, it reduces this organ’s ability to perform its vital function of oxygen delivery and the removal of carbon dioxide from the body.
Symptoms of asbestosis include:
- Shortness of breath
- Regular cough
- Strain on the heart
Destruction of lung tissue can begin within hours or days after inhaling asbestos particles and can continue even after exposure to asbestos has ended, setting up the individual to a future of impaired health. Symptoms of asbestosis may not show up for decades after initial exposure. A period of 10 to 50 years may intervene before asbestosis is discovered and verified through x-rays or health tests. During that period, the individual may be pain-free and totally unaware of the problem.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for asbestosis once it has developed due to the inability to repair damaged lungs. Certain treatments such as oxygen therapy, however, can improve the quality of life for people who suffer from the disease. In some patients, the disease will progress while for others it may remain stable. Those with asbestosis generally face a higher risk for the onset of other lung-related diseases, such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.
