The Perecman Firm, is pleased to announce that Louis Godfrey has been selected as the winner of our 2021 Avonte Oquendo Memorial Scholarship for Autism. Louis recently graduated from J.L. Mann Academy in Greenville, South Carolina and will be attending Clemson University this fall. Louis’ winning essay on “Adversity and Autism” was an inspiring account of his experience living with high-functioning autism – from the behavioral signs that led to his diagnosis and the difficulties he and his parents faced early in his education, to the steps his took to succeed. Learning about his diagnosis, Louis explains, “was a critical step to overcoming it.” With help from his parents, support groups, and therapy, Louis was able to implement autism strategies and reenter the public school system in middle school, where he played trumpet, made friends in the band, and earned a spot in the All-County Band. In high school, he enrolled in a magnet program specializing in science and math, earning all A’s and eventually becoming team captain of the robotics club where he strived to ensure everyone on his team felt valued. This spring, Louis graduated with honors with a 4.93 GPA. Our team congratulates Louis and wishes him the very best in his studies at Clemson! The Perecman Firm, received numerous applications from bright and talented students across the country, and their inspiring essays made selecting a winner this year incredibly difficult.
