Surgical Errors

Our NYC Medical Malpractice Lawyers Fight for Patients' Futures

Research conducted by Johns Hopkins University reveals that surgical errors occur more than 4,000 times every year in the United States. Some medical events are non-preventable, adverse side effects of surgical procedure—injuries resulting from surgical errors do not fit this category. Surgical errors happen when a surgeon or surgical assistant fails to perform the acceptable standard of care on a patient, and the patient consequently suffers serious harm, even death.

The Perecman Firm, includes highly-experienced and qualified New York City medical malpractice attorneys—all of whom have won massive cases for injured patients. Surgical errors are emotionally, physically, and financially costly. Victims should not have to bear the burden of their doctor's or hospital's mistakes.

Were you or a loved one harmed by a surgical mistake? The Perecman Firm, is here to evaluate your claim and determine your legal recourse. Call (212) 577-9325 to learn more.

Common Surgical Mistakes

That same research by Johns Hopkins indicated that many of these surgical errors fall into the category of “never events," or events that should never occur. These events include wrong site surgery, wrong patient surgery, wrong limb amputation, and other similar mistakes. There is never an excuse for a surgeon to leave an operating instrument inside a patient’s body, or to perform the wrong procedure on a patient, and yet it happens – 39 times a week and 20 times a week, respectively.

Some common types of surgical errors include, but are not limited to:

  • Leaving foreign objects inside of a patient
  • Performing the wrong procedure on a patient
  • Operating on the wrong body part or side of the body
  • Accidental perforation of internal organs / internal bleeding
  • Anesthesia errors (too much or too little)
  • Improper sanitation causing surgical-related infections

If any of these events happened to you or a loved, one, contact our New York City medical malpractice attorney as soon as possible for a free consultation. Let us fight for you.

Surgical Error Statistics

Research on surgical mistakes is troubling in that it exists at all. Any avoidable mistake that harms a patient is concerning, and yet these incidents continue to occur at an alarming rate. Some statistics on surgical mistakes include:

  • Most never events harm patients between the ages of 40-49
  • 62% of surgeons cited in surgical mistake incidents had been cited at least once before
  • Never events occur in one out of every 112,000 surgical procedures
  • The most common type of never event is wrong side surgery, comprising 59% of this category
